An orange tom stepped through the stunted bushes and pushed his way into the clearing. Walking forward, Firemask's paws made soft indents in the earth where they sank into the sandy ground. Sitting down in the middle of the sand, Firemask opened his mouth and scented the air for his apprentice, Blazepaw. The yound warrior was rather good in a fight and believed he could make his apprentice into a great fighter. This was Firemask's first time battle training anyone.

Blazepaw slank through the bushes toward his mentor quietly, and out onto the sandy ground, his face expressionless. The usual Blazepaw attitiude. Blazepaw was curious though about battle, if not only a little. He was small, smaller then most fireclan cats which were pretty small to start with. Blazepaw waved his tail to his mentor his only greeting. The young tom just stood a few feet away motionlessly, still as a rock. Waiting for an order of what to do or and example to follow. His pale golden eyes locked on Firemask.

Firemask smiled at Blazepaw as he stepped into the clearing. He couldn't wait to battle train someone! Firemask tried thinking back to what his mentor had taught him when he was just Blazepaw's age. He could remember it was his favourite part of training to be a warrior. "Hello, Blazepaw." The orange cat greeted with a wave of his tail. "Okay, so we're going to start with a simple move as this is your first session." Firemask thought of something he could start with, that was easy enough for him to teach and Blazepaw to understand. "I'm going to get you to try and jump on my back and try to stay on, it's called the leap-and-hold. This is always a basic move in battle, especially for a small cat, as you are now beyond range of your opponent's paws and can probably inflict some severe wounds." Firemask sat down for a minute and thought of how he should instruct further, but couldn't think of anything, so he meowed, "Don't worry about hurting me with unsheathed claws, just try your best." So Firemask bent his legs into a semi-crouch position, keeping himself light on his feet so he could dodge if needed.

Blazepaw nodded quickly keeping silent and taking in the directions, he was not sure about leaping on his mentor. He did not want to hurt him but he trusted what Firemask said. Blazepaw moved into a standing position, his muscles tense as he thought how to approach this. He stalked forward a few paces, stiff legged. Then burst into a charge, a fast charge. He was faster then most cats because he was so small and light weight. Hoping that he surprised his mentor with his speed he leaped over Firemask’s head in a mock attack then turned around to pounce on his back which was now facing him. He leapt into the air.

Firemask kept light on his paws as he watched Blazepaw streak toward him. The young cat had speed for sure, he'd give him that. The orange tabby blinked as Blazepaw went leaping behind him, as he had expected the apprentice to attack. Now expecting an attack from the back, Firemask nimbly turned around and jumped to the side, as he saw Blazepaw leaping for him.

Blazepaw found himself pouncing onto nothing. Feeling discouraged he stared at Firemask his eyes flaming with fustration. He did not know how to approach this, his tail lashed as he stood looking at the experienced warrior. Now he just decided to dash foward and leap onto his back. He ran foward a bit slower then last time. He jumped into the air and aimed for his back. Even Blazepaw knew this was a feeble atempt.

Firemask saw his apprentice's eyes blaze up as he missed. It was almost encouraging since Firemask was so used to Blazepaw's blank expression, and he had started towonder if the cat would ever show emotion again. The orange tom's eyes narrowed as he saw Blazepaw take another attempt at it, with alot less technique than last time. Thinking of how long this would go on if Blazepaw missed again, Firemask leapt into the air and pushed Blazepaw out of the air from his jump.

Blazepaw fell to the ground with a thump, the breath was knocked right out of him. He closed his eyes as if trying to catch it again, then suddenly when he seemed defeated he jumped to his paws quickly and tried again. He raced towards the hopefully bewildered Firemask and launched himself for the large toms back. His eyes full of excitement for once, almost every cat in his clan had forgotten he had that feeling.

Firemask's eyes widened as the knocked-down apprentices leapt to his feet and came charging at him again. Firemask might've been more alert if this were a real battle, but it was just training with an apprentice and the typical apprentice would usually give up after the first couple of fails. Completely relaxed and unprepared, Firemask didn't have time to dodge.
